Ashish Shelar meets Top junior colleges in Mumbai on seat increase

Newly appointed school education minister Ashish Shelar met principals of top junior colleges in the city to seek opinion on whether increase of up to 8% seats in arts and commerce and 5% in science for the first year junior college admissions is really possible.

As the SSC results of students had a huge impact by the discontinuation of internal exams in languages and social sciences, the increase of seats is one such solution that has been proposed so that SSC students have a level playing field in FYJC admission 2019.

Shelar and education department officials didi a meeting with around 60 principals at Jai Hind College. A principal said: “We were told that Govt. is planning to increase seats at our colleges and asked for our feedback. There was a mixed reaction from all the Principals. Some answered in affirmative and Some principals raised concerns over the lack of infrastructure or staff and the need for a long term solution for the same.” Presently, aided divisions have 120 seats while unaided divisions have 80 students.
